University of Milan
The University of Milan, sometimes known as UniMi or Statale, is an Italian public research university. With around 60,000 students and a permanent teaching and research staff of about 2,000, it is one of Europe's largest universities.
The University of Milan is divided into ten schools, with 140 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, 32 doctoral schools, and 65+ specialization schools. Over the years, the University's research and teaching activities have increased and garnered significant international attention.
The League of European Research Universities (LERU), a collection of twenty-one research-intensive European universities, counts the University as its only Italian member. It is consistently ranked first in Italy (ARWU), alongside the University of Pisa and Sapienza University of Rome, and is also consistently ranked among the best universities in Italy in various ranking systems, both overall and in specific subject areas.
Many noteworthy graduates have attended the University of Milan, including Riccardo Giacconi, a Nobel winner in physics, Enrico Bombieri, a Fields medalist, and former Prime Ministers Silvio Berlusconi and Bettino Craxi. The university has also had noteworthy faculty members, including Nobel Laureate Giulio Natta in chemistry and Wolf Prize winner Giuseppe Occhialini in physics.
