University of Pisa
The University of Pisa is one of Italy's and Europe's oldest and most prestigious universities. Although several researchers trace its origins in the 11th century, the University of Pisa was officially founded in 1343. It is evident, however, that Pisa had a "Universitas" in the traditional sense of the word, that is, a community of students who gathered around professors, from the middle of the 12th century. Leonardo Fibonacci was born and worked during this time period. He was a renowned mathematician who, for the first time in Europe, combined the spirit and procedures of Greek geometry with the instruments of Arabic mathematics through his work.
There are 20 departments at the University of Pisa. These departments provide a variety of courses in their respective fields. PhD's programs are often provided and organized by departments. Except for a few courses at the faculty of foreign languages and literature, and some scientific programs offered in collaboration with Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, such as the international M.Sc. in aerospace engineering (EuMAS), Master in Business Informatics, Master of Science in Space Engineering, and Master in Computer Science and Networking, the lectures are mostly given in Italian. Students also have access to a language center where they can take foreign language classes, a sports center (Cus Pisa) where they can participate in intramural sports leagues and practice sports in practically all the disciplines accessible in Italy, and six university refectories (Mense universitarie). The University of Pisa is not arranged as a single campus, but rather as a collection of buildings distributed around the Pisa area, particularly in the city center.
