Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) is Kuwait's firs private university. It has an agreement with the University of Missouri–St. Louis for dual enrollment. The university was intended to supplement Kuwait University, the country's only institution of higher learning at the time, and to meet the educational needs of the local community and the Persian Gulf region. In January 1997, the Kuwaiti Academic Group, composed of 41 Kuwait University faculty members, was formed to lay the groundwork for the proposed "University of the Future." A collaboration was formed with the University of Missouri at St. Louis (UMSL), the international counterpart university chosen to assist in the establishment of the university. The Private Universities Decree, No. 34, issued by the State of Kuwait in 2000, facilitated the development, resulting in the establishment of a temporary campus in Hawally. The issuance of Emiri Decree No. 156 in 2002 completed the legal establishment of GUST as the State of Kuwait's first private university, allowing the first academic year to begin in 2002–2003.

GUST awarded diplomas to approximately 400 graduates at its first commencement ceremony in June 2007.
