Deserts are arid and harsh environments. Because the amount of rain falls short of what is required for things to grow, only a few animals and plants can adapt ... read more...

  1. Antarctica is ranked at the top of the list of the world's largest deserts. It is also the coldest, and driest place in the world. Annual rainfall here is only 200 millimeters, mostly in the form of snow, and in coastal places. That number will decrease as we go deeper into the continent.

The area of this desert accounts for about 14,000,000 square kilometers. Despite the harsh climate and habitat, and the absence of a regular population, between 1,000 and 5,000 people come here every year to live and work.

This place didn't even get the sun for months. However, due to climate change and global warming, over the past 50 years, temperatures in the Antarctic desert have risen 2.5 times higher than in the previous day.

  2. The Sahara desert is not yet the largest desert in the world, but it is the largest hot desert in the world. The area of the Sahara amounts to more than 9,200,000 km and is expanding.

This desert covers almost all of North Africa. Only excepting lands on the Mediterranean coast, the Atlas Mountains in the Maghreb, the Nile Valley in Egypt, and Sudan.

A few thousand years ago, through a wave of climate change, the Sahara was evenly covered with the green of the trees. It is expected that in 15,000 years, this desert will again be dyed green full of vitality.

  3. The Arabian Desert is a vast desert in West Asia. It stretches from Yemen to the Persian Gulf, Oman, Jordan, and Iraq. The desert also occupies most of the Arabian Peninsula, its total area amounting to 2,330,000 square kilometers. It is the third large desert in the world and the largest in the Asian region.

It is home to a collection of red sand dunes and deadly quicksand. The temperature range in this desert is very large, which can freeze at night seasonally. The biodiversity here is not too much, but there are still a few endemic plant species.

  4. The Gobi Desert is grassland and large desert located in East Asia. It includes parts of northern and northeastern China and southern Mongolia. As a result, the area of this desert amounts to 1,300,000 square kilometers.

Historically, it was once under the sovereignty of the Mongol Empire and was home to many important cities as they lay along the Silk Road. The Gobi Desert was also the source of many important fossils, including the first dinosaur eggs. Besides, there are great dinosaur skeletons, including those of tyrannosaurus rex.

  5. An area of more than 900,000 square km makes it the world's fifth-largest desert. The Kalahari also covers about 70% of Botswana, parts of Zimbabwe, Namibia, and the Republic of South Africa.

According to the researchers, this is not really a desert because there is only one truly arid region located in the Southwest region with an average annual rainfall of 175 millimeters. Some areas are quite erratic in rain, with a flow of about 250 millimeters or more annually, which is also a suitable breeding ground for many plant species.

In summer, the Kalahari has temperatures between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius. In winter, there is a cold and dry climate, which can have frost at night. The average temperature around the end of winter may even drop to just 0 degrees Celsius.

  6. Patagonia desert is a representative from Argentina, it extends from the rain-less western flank of the Andes mountains to the eastern Atlantic Ocean, which has a tremendous likeness, amounting to more than 670,000 square km.

In terms of terrain, the desert consists of lands interspersed with mass blocks. They are separated by river valleys and canyons. The western part of the Patagonia steppe is a lake of icy origin. Besides, there are arid mountain ranges or cold temperate forests along the valleys.

This harshness is believed to be due to the main influence of the terrain. Since Patagonia is located on the rain-less side of the mountain range, the steam evaporates very quickly. Rainfall is small, but the rainwater evaporates rapidly, making it a barren area.

  7. Great Victory desert is located in the south of Australia, characterized by its barrenness and very few inhabitants.

It is also the largest desert in the country with more than 424,400 square km in terms of area. The land in this place is mainly parallel dunes, meadows, pebbles, and a few other salt lakes.

There are usually thunderstorms and storms with an average number of about 15 to 20 storms per year. However, the average annual rainfall is still quite low, and there isn't frequent rain. Great Victoria's temperatures usually range from 32 to 40 degrees Celsius in the summer. By winter, temperatures will drop slightly lower, between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius.

  8. The Syrian desert is also known as the Syrian Steppe. It is located in West Asia, covering parts of Iraq, Jordan, and Syria.

With an area of about 518,000 square kilometers, the Syrian desert is known as the "dead land". Despite its large area, it is extremely desolate and barren and is ranked as one of the driest deserts in the world.

Ecosystems in the region are also under terrible threats due to drought, fake herding, illegal hunting, and some man-made guarding activities. Even many of the creatures in this place have disappeared without a trace.

  9. The Great Basin desert is located between Nevada and the Wasatch Range. It covers an area of 492,000 square kilometers. Its temperature includes hot dry summers and snowy winters which spans a large part of the state of Nevada, an extent into Western, Uttar, Eastern California, and Idaho.

There are more than 33 peeks within the desert, with summits higher than 3000m, and valleys are also high with elevations above 1200m. The biological communities of the Great Basin desert vary. The significant variation between valleys and peaks has created a variety of habitat niches which has, in turn, led to many small isolated populations of genetically unique plants and animal species throughout the region.

  10. Chihuahua is a desert ecological zone covering an area of nearly 362,000 square kilometers. More than 90% of its area is located in the national territory of Mexico.

Chihuahua has a hot climate, is the second-largest desert in North America, and the third-largest in the Western Hemisphere region. It begins stretching from south Albuquerque, New Mexico to the north of Mexico City.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), it can be said to be the world's most biodiverse desert with 20% grassland. However, there are still no complete statistics on the species here, as well as the severe decline over time.
