Sonic 3D Blast

Sonic 3D Blast, also known as Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island in Europe and Japan, is a 1996 platform game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series for the Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn. The player takes on the role of Sonic the Hedgehog and sets out on a mission to free the Flickies, birds imprisoned by Doctor Robotnik. Sonic must be guided through a number of themed stages in order to gather Flickies and destroy Robotnik. Though it keeps game elements from previous Sonic games, Sonic 3D Blast stands out with its isometric perspective and pre-rendered 3D models transformed into sprites.

Sega launched both versions in November 1996, with a Windows port following the following year. Sonic 3D Blast was the final Sonic game produced for Genesis, and it has been rereleased in Sonic compilations and digital distribution channels. Despite its economic success, it earned mixed reviews. The isometric gameplay, controls, and tempo were criticized, while the aesthetics and soundtrack were complimented. Jon Burton, the Genesis version's principal programmer, published an unauthorized director's cut version in 2017 with altered gameplay aspects and enhanced controls.
