Sonic Heroes
Sonic Heroes is a 3D platform game released in 2003 by Sega as part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It was developed by Sonic Team USA and published by Sega. The player races across stages with a squad of series of characters collecting rings, defeating robots, and collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds required to destroy Doctor Eggman. To conquer obstacles in each level, the player shifts between the team's three characters, each with their own set of powers. Sonic Heroes abandons the action-adventure and exploration-based gameplay of its predecessors Sonic Adventure (1998) and Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) in favor of a more linear approach reminiscent of Sega Genesis-era Sonic games.
Reviewers were divided. They commended the game's emphasis on rapid action and drew comparisons to the series' earlier 2D entries, a decision that some saw as an upgrade over the Sonic Adventure titles. Reviewers praised the graphic style as well as the realistic sceneries and textures. Critics, on the other hand, panned the game for failing to solve prior series issues such as bad camera, controls, and voice acting. Despite receiving poor reviews, the game was a commercial success, selling 3.41 million copies by 2007.
