Sonic Generations
Sonic Generations is a 2011 platform game released by Sega for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, and Windows. The game, created to commemorate the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise' 20th anniversary, follows Sonic and his sidekick Tails as they establish an alliance with their prior selves. It has two gameplay modes: "Classic", which uses a side-scrolling perspective akin to the original Sega Genesis Sonic games, and "Modern", which uses 3D levels similar to Sonic Unleashed (2008) and Sonic Colors (2010).
Critics praised the game, and it was a financial success, selling 1.85 million copies by May 2012. Reviewers praised its aesthetics, soundtrack, and gameplay, calling it a fitting homage to the brand. It also got considerable criticism, mostly for its intermittent frame rate and control issues. The 3DS version received mixed reviews, with critics praising its short duration and design but dismissing it as inferior to Dimps' prior Sonic games. The Classic Sonic featured in the game has made several cameos throughout the franchise.
