Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) was founded in 1993 with 118 students as Malaysia's eighth and Sarawak's first public university. The universities began with two faculties: the Social Sciences Faculty and the Resource Science and Technology Faculty. UNIMAS now has ten faculties and 92 programs, with over 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The international community is made up of people from over 50 different countries.
UNIMAS is uniquely placed to make a difference. The campus community can experience the island's rich tangible and intangible heritage thanks to our location in Sarawak, Borneo, the heart of the Malay Archipelago and a pivotal location for scientific explorations of species. Kuching, Sarawak's capital city, is a bustling melting pot about 30 minutes away from campus.
UNIMAS' commitment to research has already been recognized by stakeholders and industry partners, who have provided endowments for the establishment of eight research chairs, including the Tun Zaidi Chair for Medicinal Chemistry, the Tun Openg Chair for Sago Technology, the Shell Chair for Environmental Studies, and the Sapura Chair for Information and Communication Technology. Currently, UNIMAS' research is concentrated on three specialty areas of study:
- Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation
- Information Communication and Creative Technology
- Sustainable Community Transformation
