Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is a public research university in Malaysia that specializes in engineering, science, and technology. UTM's history dates back to 1904 with the establishment of a technical school, which later evolved into a college, then an institute, and finally a university in the 1970s.
The university has two campuses, one in the heart of the country's capital, Kuala Lumpur, and the other in Johor Bahru, the state capital of Johor state, on the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia. The latter is UTM's main campus, and it is home to ten residential colleges. UTM's sports facilities include a soccer stadium that opened in 2011 and can seat nearly 40,000 people, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, kayaking and horse-riding centers, and a track.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's motto is "In the name of god for mankind," and its maroon and gold emblem is made up of an open book, representing the Koran; a round-bottomed flask, representing science; a crescent, representing Islam; and a golden circle, representing the universe. Committed, communicative, creative, consistent, and competent are UTM's core values. There is also an official song, "Keunggulan Terbilang."
Johor, known for its beaches and rainforests, has a causeway connecting it to Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur is home to the Petronas Twin Towers, the National Mosque of Malaysia, and the Batu Caves. Malaysian politicians Wee Ka Siong and Sim Tze Tzin are among the well-known alumni.
