Universiti Sains Malaysia
The fifth famous university in Top 15 Best Universities in Malaysia that Toplist wants to introduce to you is Universiti Sains Malaysia. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was founded in 1969 as the country's second university and was originally known as Universiti Pulau Pinang. USM relocated from its temporary location at the Malayan Teachers' Training College, Bukit Gelugor, to its current 416.6 hectare site at Minden, approximately 9.7 kilometers from Georgetown, Pulau Pinang (Penang Island), Malaysia, in 1971.
Natural Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Building Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education are all available at USM. These are available to approximately 34,000 students at its 17 Academic Schools on the main campus in Penang; 6 Schools at the Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal (approximately 50 kilometers from the main campus); and 3 at the Health Campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan (approximately 300km from the main campus). This figure includes over 3,800 international students from 26 different countries.
USM also has 17 dedicated research centers for a wide range of specializations such as archaeology, medicine and dentistry, molecular medicine, science and technology, Islamic development and management studies, policy research, and international studies. Under the auspices of USAINS Holdings Sdn Bhd, the University's commercial arm, it also offers consultancy, testing, and advisory services to the industry.
Since its inception, USM has used the School system rather than the traditional Faculty system to ensure that its students are multi-disciplined as a result of their exposure to other Schools' areas of study. It also encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities by providing a plethora of clubs and societies.
As a Research Intensive University designated by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) in 2007, USM provides educational and research opportunities to students and faculty. USM was also the first university in the country to be chosen by the Malaysian government to participate in the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX), a fast-track program that assists tertiary institutions in achieving world-class status.
