Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 American animated musical romantic fantasy film directed by Bill Condon and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 30th Disney animated feature film and the third released during the Disney Renaissance period. It is based on the 1756 fairy tale of the same name by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont (who was only credited in the French dub), as well as ideas from Jean Cocteau's 1946 French film of the same name. Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise (in their feature directing debuts) directed the picture, which was produced by Don Hahn and based on a script by Linda Woolverton.

This animated translation of the famous French literature boasts the vocal talents of Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, and Richard White, among others, and is a long-held Disney favorite for many. A greedy prince is converted into a terrible beast after being hexed by a disguised enchantress (Benson). True love is the only thing that can bring him back to human form while he is imprisoned in his fortress. Belle (O'Hara), a bookish girl from a small hamlet, arrives at the beast's house in quest of her father, who has gone missing. The Beast, who is imprisoning Belle's father, promises to free him in exchange for Belle taking his place. What follows is a slow-burning friendship between Belle and Beast.
