Inside Out is a 2015 computer-animated film directed by Pete Docter and written by him, Meg LeFauve, and Josh Cooley. Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Kaitlyn Dias, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan lend their voices to the film. Joy (Poehler), Sadness (Smith), Fear (Hader), Anger (Black), and Disgust (Black) are the five personified emotions in the film (Kaling). They guide a little girl called Riley (Dias) through life within the mind as she and her parents (Lane and MacLachlan) acclimate to their new circumstances after moving from Minnesota to San Francisco.
Inside Out premiered uncompetitive at the 68th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2015, and was released in the United States on June 19, 2015. The media praised it for its workmanship, storyline, subject matter, narrative, and vocal performances (particularly those of Poehler, Smith, Kind, and Black). Inside Out was chosen as one of the top ten films of 2015 by organizations such as the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. It grossed $858.8 million worldwide, making it the seventh-highest-grossing picture of 2015. Inside Out dominated the 88th Academy Awards season with two nominations (one of which it won) and a slew of other honors.
