Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)

Raya and the Last Dragon is a Walt Disney Animation Studios computer-animated fantasy adventure film released in 2021. It is the studio's 59th picture, directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, and is based on traditional Southeast Asian traditions. It stars Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Izaac Wang, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Benedict Wong, and Sandra Oh, and was written by Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim. The story follows a warrior princess who sets out to find the mythical final dragon in the hopes of reuniting with her father and banishing the evil spirits known as the Druun from the realm of Kumandra.

The country of Kumandra is under siege again after 500 years of calm from the terrible Druun army. Only this time, there are no holy dragons to protect them from the fabled foe. Raya (Kelly Marie Tran), the great Chief Benja's (Daniel Dae Kim) daughter, is the only survivor of the merciless attack. To fend off the demonic Druun, the warrior must travel throughout Kumandra in pursuit of the last dragon, Sisu (Awkwafina). She is the sole chance for humanity, having been the creature that restrained the Druun years earlier. A spectacle of modern-day animation, Raya and the Last Dragon is a more than fitting entry in the Disney canon, dancing with tropes in an air-brushed fashion but delivering a full-fledged narrative with relatable characters, rich voice-over work, and incredible set-pieces.
