  1. Driving along the Hummingbird Highway in any direction, it's difficult to miss this white cabin surrounded by automobiles, nestled in a little clearing next to the road and shaded by a huge tree. This is one of the best restaurants in Belize. Ms. Bertha's Tamales has minimal signage, but locals do not require it. Ms. Bertha Lisbey and her tamales are well-known. They are believed to be Belize's best. A relief from the heat is provided by one of her seasoned, sticky chicken-and-corn tamales. Combine it with a hot sauce she's been making for almost as long as the tamales and a glass of cool soda.

Since Ms. Bertha is now 75 years old, her daughter is the one who serves long-time customers as well as first-time guests who are intrigued by the stories you'll hear from all across the country. During high season, the little shack can serve hundreds of tamales every day, but each one is made with the same care and affection. Everyone takes a seat on a bench and waits patiently for their turn. There aren't many places to stop along the Hummingbird Highway, but that's not the only reason to stop at Bertha's. Make sure you come to a complete halt.

  2. In 1974, what began as a take-out burger window evolved into a sit-down restaurant featuring carefully prepared Caribbean specialties like conch soup and fritters, mojo de ajo, fried green plantains, and street corn. You may have to wait in line to eat dinner at the restaurant during peak season, but most of the time there isn't much of a wait. Make sure to save space for dessert. Elvi's Kitchen is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Chef Jennie Staines is a local celebrity in San Pedro, where she runs Elvi's Kitchen, a popular hangout for both locals and visitors. If you have the opportunity, come for supper on Friday night, when Chef Jennie and her team present a Mayan Feast, their method of maintaining Maya culture's culinary trademarks. Pibil, a pit-roasted pig, will almost certainly be served, as will mechado, a shellfish soup. From an early age, Chef Jennie's life revolved on food; her father was a fisherman, and her mother (the Elvi after whom the restaurant is named) prepared and sold tamales. Jennie stepped in to aid her, and a dream was born. What should you order if you show up on a different day? Colu Henry suggests the chicken curry, which she guarantees will leave you speechless.

  3. Mestizo traditions are widespread in San Pedro, a village on Belize's northern island of Ambergris Caye. This restaurant is in the top of the best restaurants in Belize. The Mestizo people are descendants of the Maya and the Spanish, and a new civilization was created when the two cultures collided. There are a lot of Mestizo individuals in San Pedro, but there isn't a finer Mestizo restaurant than El Fogon, which is owned by Miss Suzanna and run by her daughter.

Everything is baked in a traditional outdoor oven (fogon literally means "kitchen hearth") and is wonderful. Try the salbutes, a taco-like delicacy prepared with fried tortillas that is soft and crunchy at the same time, or the pig tail with split peas. The coconut rice, in particular, is to die for.

Chef Rob's locally sourced four-course or a la carte menu changes frequently, depending on what he can get his hands on. Beef carpaccio, fresh fish cooked with ginger, coconut, and lemongrass, and hibiscus marinated pork tenderloin with cranberry and balsamic sauce are some of his dishes, which are inspired by Maya, Garifuna, and Asian cuisines. 7. The Truck Stop Belize is Belize's first shipping container food park and beer garden, with restaurants, ice cream, and a fully stocked bar. Movie nights, adult spelling bees, live music, farmers markets, and backyard activities like ping pong and cornhole are all available at this ridiculously awesome shipping-container food park, which also serves as Ambergris Caye's entertainment centre. There's even a pool! And there's a bar! And there's a dock over the lagoon with a funny (but true) crocodile warning.

Ice cream, Latin American food, Southeast Asian cuisine, and New Haven–style pizza are all represented by colorful containers, and the food in Truck Stop is all fresh and delicious, prepared using locally sourced ingredients. Expect this place to keep growing better and better because the proprietors are expat filmmakers who know how to make things wonderful.

  8. The restaurant Jungle Farm at Copal Tree Lodge is the place to go if you just have one dining splurge in Southern Belize. The restaurant is a joy with its huge deck, expansive views, and excellent service, and the location, high on a rainforest hilltop, is superb. With a farm-to-table mentality, the food is carefully prepared, mixing uniquely Belizean and worldwide flavors.

The majority of the products and produce originate from Copal Tree's own farm and gardens, as well as local farmers and fishermen. 9. The elegant, candlelit restaurant at Victoria House is one of the most expensive on the island, but it is also one of the best. Arrive before sundown for a mojito on the patio, then tuck into a cashew-crusted grouper or imported beef tenderloin in the white-tablecloth dining room. A seasonal fish market is also available, with fresh seafood hand-picked by the chef at the hotel's pier. Guests may relax and enjoy world-class cuisine while taking in spectacular ocean views, which are served everyday for breakfast, lunch, and supper. Dine in the comfort of an air-conditioned inside environment or on the balcony under the stars. You'll have a casually elegant experience either way. Ask about the "Chef's Special of the Day," which is always a delectable meal prepared with the best of what's fresh and available locally.

The dishes are massive, tasty, and artistically presented. Palmilla Restaurant have plenty of vegan and vegetarian alternatives, and the wine list is impressive. Admiral Nelson's Beach Bar, the hotel's casual, open-air cafe on the seaside, is a good choice for lunch.
