The black volcanic rock mountain towers over its granite mountain neighbors, Jebel Ahmar and Jebel Raba. The mountain is located in the South Sinai Governorate, close to the town of Saint Catherine. The mountain is named after Saint Catherine, a well-known Christian martyr. Saint Catherine is thought to have been murdered for her beliefs, a fate shared by many early Christians. Monks are said to have discovered her remains on the Mountain, which are now housed in the monastery named after her. The mountain has long held religious significance, which draws pilgrims in modern-day Egypt. On the summit, there is a chapel dedicated to St. Catherine, as well as a meteorological station. Mount Catherine is a popular tourist destination with well-defined trekking routes.

In January 2020, archaeologists discovered a cave to the north of Mount Catherine with paintings of people and animals in red pigment dating back to the Chalcolithic Period, circa the 5th–4th millennia BCE. Red painted images, according to John Darnell, are not as common as engraved images and text. The camel painting indicates that at least some of the graffiti is not older than the first millennium BC and may date from a later period. The cave was strewn with graffiti from various epochs.
