Halti traditionally known as "Haltiatunturi" is Finland's tallest peak. It is 1,365m above sea level. Halti is located in Finland's far northwestern panhandle, on the border with Norway. It is a popular summer hike, and climbing is not difficult because it is a walk-up mountain. The terrain is made up of big rocks with very little earth visible. So, while reaching the top of Halti is not tough, getting there is a bit more challenging and will take several days.
Halti may be climbed all year, however, because of the intense cold conditions during the winter, the most popular period to go to the peak is from June to August. If you visit before June, the weather is particularly rainy and there is still snow on the ground. After August, the temperatures have already dropped significantly, and the weather can be unpredictable.
During the winter, you can get there via cross-country skiing or renting a snowmobile from the town of Kilpisjärvi. Because the region is a national park, you can only use your snowmobile on designated trails.
