The 35th America's Cup, which was held in Bermuda in 2017, caused a substantial transformation in the island's culinary industry. With the eyes of the world on ... read more...

  1. The Village Pantry, a roadside restaurant with a beautiful outdoor seating area, is a great spot to stop for healthful meals produced with local products at any time of day. It's also one of Bermuda's top restaurants outside of Hamilton, so if you're stuck in the middle of the island and in need of some seriously fantastic food, look no further.

You should enjoy a mimosa to accompany your croque-monsieur breakfast, a carafe of Grüner Veltliner to accompany your Alsatian flatbread lunch, and a bottle of full-bodied Amarone to accompany your BBQ beef short rib evening

To say that Village Pantry has a little bit of everything would be an understatement, given the breadth of its menu and cooking types. Most of it is executed flawlessly, so you can order the vegan tostada with the same confidence as the thick-cut lamb chops. Poke bowls, which can be made with cauliflower rice and a variety of meats like fresh tuna, house-smoked salmon, or crispy pork belly, are popular among health-conscious diners. Bermuda fish curry, made with pan-fried fish and a cashew korma sauce, is a local favorite. If you have children, request a table near the outdoor play area so they can burn off some steam.

  2. Bermuda's most popular restaurant, Blu Bar & Grill, goes all out with its characteristic color: Just beyond the hostess stand, a large starfish hangs on a bright-blue wall; cerulean chairs rest on a navy carpet; and, off in the distance, a wall of windows all facing the Great Sound and Hamilton Harbour—blissfully azure waters as far as the eye can see. Crisp white linens and white high-back chairs adorn the main dining area, while warm wooden walls surround the black granite bar, which is, of course, the perfect place to start the evening.

With various large-format options and limited-availability selections, Blu Bar & Grill 's wine list is one of the most extensive on the island. If you'd rather try other things with your dinner, don't overlook the by-the-glass menu, which includes numerous terrific alternatives.

Blu Bar & Grill's sushi, nigiri, and sashimi; Asian fusion meals; a raw bar; classic osetra caviar; traditional Italian pastas; locally caught fish; hefty cuts of beef; and—gasp—pizza on Blu's everything-but-the-kitchen-sink menu. Most traditionalists might shun this place because of the mishmash of cuisines, but it all works.

  3. Mad Hatters, a local favorite in northern Hamilton, exudes whimsical charm from the moment you walk in. No, you are not required to wear one of the hats that adorn the rafters and the walls, but many people do. On the menu, there aren't many better mussels than the ones served here, with either Thai coconut curry or garlic cream sauce; and the jumbo lump crab cakes with sweet chili and ginger aioli would have most Marylanders ordering seconds. Bring friends that are passionate about cuisine and like a good laugh.

The cuisine of Mad Hatters is described as classic European with Thai and North American influences. If that seems perplexing, you've come to the correct place: nothing about it should make sense—the hidden location, the party hats, the fairytale references—but it all comes together somehow. There's no better mussel bowl than this one, which comes with either Thai coconut curry or garlic cream sauce.

Most Marylanders would request seconds of the jumbo lump crab cakes with sweet chili and ginger aioli. The Hoof & Feather, a deer chop with duck breast and Calvados flamed pears, is also a good choice, but don't order anything until you've heard the specials. In fact, most locals eat without consulting a menu; the chef is well-known for his daily creations, which often include fresh fish.

  4. On Bermuda's far east coast, Blackbeard's is a lovely cliffside restaurant. Because the tables hug the rail, you'll get a clear view of the island's best light show. Watch as a kaleidoscope of hues lights the night sky as the sun begins to fall below the horizon—first orange, then pink, then deep purple. It's the sunset to end all sunsets, set against the backdrop of the magnificent Fort St. Catherine, one of the island's largest stone fortifications. That's before you've even looked at the menu.

Fish chowder—a spicy seafood stew customarily completed with a dash of Gosling's Black Seal rum and Outerbridge's Sherry Pepper Sauce—is hard to come by in Bermuda, so start with a bowl at Blackbeard's, since no two are same. The rockfish, a local snapper served with bananas and crushed almonds, comes next. With the flaky white fish, which is line-caught every day, the combination works like magic.

    At Blackbeard's Hideout
, you can start with a Bermuda Rum Swizzle, which is created with Gosling's Black and Gold Seal rums, orange and pineapple juice, a dash of Angostura bitters, and a splash of falernum, a local simple syrup. Then it's on to the wine.

  5. Classic French cuisine and traditional steakhouse fare are served at Fourways, which is housed in a cottage from the 1720s. Begin with the classics: foie gras with brioche, luscious lobster bisque, and Caesar salad tossed at the table. The Chateaubriand for two is a Fourways favorite, and the spiny lobster with crab filling is a special treat when it's in season. When it comes to dessert, the acidic Grand Marnier or the gingery Dark & Stormy are suggested as both of which go well with a glass of tawny Port.

The wine list is everything you'd expect it to be: long, costly, and full of varietals. Sadly, the same cannot be true for the by-the-glass selections. Order a bourbon Old Fashioned, a gin Martini, or a glass of bubbly and begin poring over the extensive menu.

  6. Harry's, an upmarket steakhouse named for entrepreneur Harry Cox, serves a giant shrimp cocktail, an iceberg wedge salad with maytag blue cheese and bacon, a 14-ounce New York Strip sirloin, and a slice of New York–style cheesecake as his favorite meal. For $85 (highly recommended), you can eat that exact meal, or order à la carte from a menu of classic steakhouse appetizers and entrées. For starters, choose half-shell oysters and Maryland crab cakes, as well as robust cuts of beef served with traditional sides.

    Cox
was a fervent rum drinker, to the point where he and his pal Malcolm Gosling—CEO of Gosling's Rum—created a limited-edition batch of sipping rum that can only be found in a small barrel behind the bar. Order one neat or a Harry's Old Fashioned (Harry's Rum, Regan's orange bitters, Angostura bitters, and demerara syrup) to imitate the guy himself. When it comes to wine, don't be intimidated by the variety. Yes, the list is lengthy, but you'll undoubtedly find a wine that suits your tastes—and, presumably, your budget.

  7. Sul Verde, Rosewood Bermuda's southern Italian trattoria, offers two menu options: à la carte and Dinner With La Nonna, a three-course, family-style dinner customized to your tastes ($60 per person). If you choose the latter, the servers will bring you sharing appetizers (such as antipasto and fried calamari), bowls of homemade pasta (such as penne Bolognese), meat and seafood platters (such as veal marsala), and a classic Italian dessert (like tiramisu or panna cotta). It's actually a fairly decent price, since Sul Verde's meatiest entrées cost approximately $40 a plate—and you'll get to experience a lot of what makes this place so excellent.

At Sul Verde, you can begin with a Negronina, a lightened-up Negroni made with Aperol, Hendrick's, and Martini Bianco. Do you prefer something a little sweeter? With Disaronno Amaretto, apricot brandy, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white, order an Albicocca amaretto sour. Then, if you're willing to spend approximately $160 on a bottle of red, go for a deep-fruited Barolo or Amarone, although there are plenty of reasonably priced Italian varietals on the list (such a $75 Sicilian Nero d'Avola).

  8. Barracuda, an expensive seafood restaurant, was a favorite of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas when they lived on the island, with darkly lit booths excellent for canoodling. This is where you can have a private talk without being overheard by the table next to you, which is perhaps why island power brokers flock to the dining room for lunch. The Bermuda fish chowder, as well as the rockfish marinated in Goslings rum and soy, then grilled and served with garlicky local greens, are among the best on the island.

Barracuda makes fantastic fruity martinis, which many locals like, but if you're looking for a pre-dinner drink, go for a classic at your table because the little bar fills up quickly. When your Hendrick's martini with olives is gone, peruse the wine list, which is brimming with seafood-friendly selections for every palate and budget.

The majority of visitors come to Barracuda for the fish, which makes sense given the abundance of local produce accessible to chef Derek Myers. The sous vide octopus appetizer with kalamata olives and seared haloumi, for example, is consistently fantastic even when it's flown in. The Bermuda fish chowder, as well as the rockfish marinated in Goslings rum and soy, then grilled and served with garlicky local greens, are among the best on the island.

    Pearl

Sushi is served at a number of eateries in Bermuda, but none are finer than Pearl, the second-floor lounge above Port O Call. First, find out what's available locally, such as freshly caught yellowfin tuna, wahoo, or rockfish. Next, order the salmon belly nigiri, a rich, fatty cut torch-blistered and finished with a sprinkle of soy sauce. (Pearl sometimes has it, and sometimes it doesn't.) When it's time to order the maki rolls, tell your server what you want and leave the rest to the chefs. Sure, there's a lot on the menu, but the white-jacketed stars working diligently behind the sushi bar are part of Pearl's brilliance.

A chilled bottle of Austrian Grüner Veltliner (try the Schloss Gobelsburg) or a chilled Kirin is a great choice (poured in a frosty glass, obviously). Pearl also has one of the best sake selections in town, with hints of pear and cantaloupe in the unfiltered Pure Snow.

First, find out what's available locally, such as freshly caught yellowfin tuna, wahoo, or rockfish. Order the usuzukuri, thinly sliced sashimi with red onion, pink ginger, rice wine, and chili oil, if rockfish is available. 10. Breezes is an outside beachside restaurant on the grounds of Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa, as its name suggests. It's the only restaurant in Bermuda where you may eat with your toes in the sand, albeit getting a table is difficult. Whether you have a reservation or not, they are all first-come, first-served, so get there early, kick off your shoes, and get seated. Don't worry if one of the few tables on the beach isn't available. You'll be sitting on the open-air wooden deck that overlooks the beach, which offers the same view as the beach. In any case, this restaurant is perfect for a relaxing lunch or a romantic sunset meal with children 12 and under are not allowed.

Stick to light spirits with a refreshing twist during the day, such as a caipirinha or a mojito. Because you'll be rum-punched out by 5 p.m., opt for wine at dinner. Three sparkling wines are available by the glass, as well as around a half-dozen other bottles. The majority are under $80, with some excellent mid-$60 options (such as the Allegrini Valpolicella for $64).

The lunch menu of Breezes is dominated by sandwiches, salads, and burgers; the fish sandwich is served island-style on toasted raisin bread with tartar sauce. At supper, a Bermuda honey crust on the rack of lamb, black rum butter and local carrots in the free-range chicken, and Bermuda onion marmalade on the black angus steak merge worldwide influences with Bermudian tradition. The surf 'n turf, especially from September to March, when spiny lobster is in season, is a hit, as is the local catch, which is usually wahoo, tuna, or rockfish simply grilled and delivered with your choice of sauce.

  11. Bring a date—and your wallet—to Bermuda's premier restaurant, Waterlot Inn, for a significant anniversary or a birthday ending in a zero. To dine here, gentlemen are no longer required to wear jackets, but they should: This establishment exudes formality and white-tablecloth grandeur. To begin, order the tableside Caesar salad, as well as the Rockefeller oysters, foie gras terrine, and yellowfin tuna crudo. If beef isn't your thing, there's a parade of usual suspects for your entrée: certified black angus cuts of meat, surf and turf tasting trios, and seafood entrees.

The 52-ounce ribeye tomahawk for two is ideal for a hungry couple, and the eight-ounce Wagyu striploin, priced at $68 per dish, is sumptuous, buttery, and well worth the money.

The side dishes are standard (creamed spinach, pancetta-wrapped brussels sprouts, lobster mac 'n' cheese), so reserve room for dessert, such as the bananas foster for two, flambéed tableside with Gosling's Black Seal rum and topped with caramel and vanilla ice cream.

  12. Wahoo's is a local's local, tucked down a cobblestone lane in the peaceful town of St. George's, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with British Colonial buildings going back to the early 1600s. The flaky white fish that the restaurant is named after is prepared in a variety of ways here. Wahoo chowder is creamy and delectable, similar to Boston clam chowder with potato and celery; wahoo nuggets are fried, kid-friendly pieces; and Bermuda's best wahoo tacos are Baha-style wahoo tacos. The most popular dish is the gently seasoned grilled wahoo served with a lemony gremolata butter.

After reading the wine list, you won't be doing backflips—the it's usual suspects of whites, reds, and a single bottle of rosé. What's the good news? Nothing will set you back more than $60.

Wahoo's called after a flaky white fish taken just a few miles off the shore of Bermuda. It's versatile and delicious, and it's executed flawlessly in every version. The wahoo chowder is rich and creamy, reminiscent of a Boston clam chowder with potatoes and celery. A must-try appetizer is smoked wahoo pâté, which comes with raw vegetables and crusty bread.

Wahoo nuggets are fried, kid-friendly treats, and the Baha-style wahoo tacos, garnished with pico de gallo and fresh lime crema, are possibly Bermuda's best. A very nice wahoo burger is also available, served as a ground patty on a bun with all the fixings. The most popular dish is the gently seasoned grilled wahoo served with a lemony gremolata butter.

    Marcus

Marcus Samuelsson's passion for soul food has been well chronicled, especially since the successful opening of his Red Rooster restaurant in New York City in 2010. You may try some of the chef's famous dishes at Marcus', such as fried chicken and waffles with roasted garlic-spiced honey or the delicious Obama short ribs, which are named after the former President, who enjoys them. Everything else has an island twist, such as the seafood paella and the fish wrapped in a banana leaf and served with a coconut curry sauce.

Marcus' serves fantastic cocktails, so whether you have dinner reservations or not, head straight to the bar. Most visitors will stay longer because of the superb rums on offer—try the limited-edition Gosling's Papa Seal, which has been aged for 15 years in bourbon barrels—as well as the trademark drinks, many of which employ house-made ingredients.

The seafood paella or the fish wrapped in a banana leaf and served with a coconut curry sauce are also excellent choices. The fish chowder bites, which are miniature seafood fritters paired with an aioli prepared with Gosling's Black Seal rum, are excellent appetizers. Don't forget about the Sunday brunch, which includes more than just eggs Benedict and Bloody Marys. For $94, you'll get an endless glass of Veuve Clicquot and access to a huge buffet of curry oxtail, rice and peas, jerked shrimp, fried chicken, and waffles, among other delicacies.

  14. Bolero, a typical French brasserie in the City of Hamilton, is hidden down an alleyway between Front and Reid streets. Your wandering thoughts will be swiftly put to rest once you find the door and walk the steps to the huge second-floor dining area, with its oversized mirrors, brightly colored murals, and soaring ceilings with exposed wooden beams. Locals come here to be astonished, and head chef and owner Jonny Roberts dazzles them with his spin on Continental cuisine every night. Take a seat at the bar, order a drink, and wait for the culinary adventure to begin.

Since the restaurant's inception in 2007, some of chef Roberts' most popular dishes have remained on the menu. There's parma ham with fried baby artichokes, parmesan, and truffle oil; shrimp pil pil in garlicky olive oil seasoned with red chillies; duck confit with orange gremolata and fava beans; and crisp lamb belly with green risotto, to name a few. Sure, they're all good options, but do yourself a favor and listen to the specials—the chef's star dishes are usually whatever he's preparing that night.

Beau Rivage, a quintessentially French restaurant on the grounds of Newstead Belmont Hills Golf Resort & Spa, has no poor seats, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking glistening Hamilton Harbour. If you're a hotel guest, you've definitely eaten breakfast or lunch here, most likely on the breezy terrace. Cook Jean Claude Garzia, himself a winner of the prized Meilleur Ouvrier de France, France's top distinction for a chef, shines brightest at dinner.
